“At ViSSEVASSE we design visual stories. With no beginning or ending. It is up to you to imbue our images with thoughts, feelings and memories. Perhaps you are reminded of long summers and happy childhood dreams, or maybe you see your present and your future." – VISSEVASSE
A perfect explanation about this brand. In this blog post I’m going to tell you more about the pretty posters and I’ve held an interview with one of the owners of this beautiful brand! Let’s get inspired!
I received 3 beautiful posters from ViSSEVASSE. I love the soft tones, colors and the minimalistic feels of the images. Also the fact that it is illustrations makes the poster more exclusive (because it is designed by one artist). You basically have exclusive art hanging on your wall, how cool?!
*These pictures are from the website ViSSEVASSE.COM
I picked the VW Camper poster because I have a think with Volkswagen vans! I also really love the composition of the illustration and because I also love the ocean, it was not a hard choice ;).

I also picked out the VW Beetle poster. Not that I am a huge fan of cars, I just really love this illustration! Where is the car going? One of my struggles, where to go to next? ;) You can create your own story around this illustration, and that’s why I love ViSSEVASSE.

My third pick, is this beach illustration. Just simply love this illustration and the way it makes me feel when I look at it. Something with freedom.

INTERVIEW WITH ViSSEVASSE
I was really interested in the brand and their history, as I am also a graphic designer. I really love to know more about the creative process, and the inspirational sources the brand uses. I came up with a set of questions and I interviewed one of the owners of ViSSEVASSE:
1. What is your name and where do you come from?
My name is Dorthe Mathiesen. I grew up near Copenhagen with my mother, father, a sister and a brother. Today I live in Copenhagen with my husband. We have three daughters at 23, 16 and 15.
2. What is the relationship with your companion?
My companion, Karsten, is also my husband. I started ViSSEVASSE 5,5 years ago and after a year Karsten quitted his job, so we could make ViSSEVASSE our common adventure. We have more than 20 years of experience as creative professionals with a passion for graphic design and aesthetics. Our relationship as partners in ViSSEVASSE is really good. We are both proud of how far ViSSEVASSE has come as well as we have common goals for the future of ViSSEVASSE and our 13 employees.
3. Why did you start your business?
It was actually not planned as many might think. One day in the late evening hours I decided to draw Langebro in Copenhagen. I wrote Copenhagen in top of the poster and used pastel colors. I showed it to my husband and he really liked. He even told me that this could be sold. I didn’t believe him, but then I showed it to more and more and started selling a lot. Before I know ViSSEVASSE was born.
4. What is your academic background? Did you study Graphic design for instance?
I have an education as textile designer and I have also worked as a children’s clothes designer. I have always liked to work freelance.
5. What are the steps of your creative process as a graphic designer?
When I draw a new poster ex one of our city posters. I start visiting the city. I take lots of photos of the city to get the vibe with me home. Then I do research of the history of the city, before I am ready to start drawing the poster. If it is more a theme or an idea I have for a poster, I create mood boards with elements to inspire me as well as I loan relevant books at the library combined with online research before I design a new product.
6. As a creative designer I know that it is hard sometimes to get inspiration, where do you get your inspiration from?
I find my inspiration from all over. It can be a great color combination in a work of art, a vintage greeting card or the shape of the nature. What we do at ViSSEVASSE is to create visual stories. With no beginning and no end. It is up to the individual to attach feelings, thoughts and memories to our images. I also have a soft spot for iconic buildings, moods and experiences, but I can find inspiration in anything from a song to a feeling.
7. The name Vissevasse has a great meaning behind it, how did you come up with this name?
I have always known that if I one day should create a company, the name should be ViSSEVASSE. It is Danish for ‘fiddelsticks’, which the dictionary defines as nonsense, poppycock, balderdash. I think of it as a verbal intended to say ‘don’t worry – it’ll all work our’. Because it always does.
8. What is a must for all your ‘winning’ designs that make it to the website?
It is important for me, that the motifs are easy to read off for the viewer. I like to stick with the look that I love. I use douche colors, because they fit into most homes. Also I have a passion for the simple graphic look combined with gradient look.
9. Would you like to work with more different artists in the future?
For the near future, we don’t have plans to work with new different designers. But I believe you should never take no for an answer, so let’s see about that ☺
10.I love the minimalistic and Nordic style, are you planning to create a different style?
Our brand is always developing as time flies. But the style of the products, I design can change and develop together with new trends, happening and good ideas. My style is Nordic and minimalist combined with delicate pastels, poetry and nostalgia. As long as it gives people a smile on their face and food for thought my job is done.
Thank you for this insider Dorthe, it is always fun to get to know the company and persons behind a business.
What do you guys think about these posters? Would you love to have some exclusive designs on your wall? I’m a fan!
